So my electric razor hasn't been giving me such a close cut anymore, and every time I look for replacement blades, I run into two issues. First, I never remember what model I have, so I don't know which blades I need. Second, the price for replacement blades is almost half the price of buying a new electric razor. Granted, the blades have lasted me more than five years, and probably longer if I didn't lose one (dropped it in the trash while cleaning the hairs out.) But it just seems silly because now it's like...well, I could buy replacement blades, but how much longer is the battery going to last? Should I just spend the money to buy a new one altogether?
Anyhow, I bought a Mach3 just to give the non-electric route a chance; I got an electric razor as a gift before I even needed to shave, so I've always used electric. Man, let me tell you, this Mach3 was a waste of money. No better than my dull electric.
Maybe I'll try using shaving cream, see if that helps. But I think when the Mach3 gets dull, I'll switch back to electric. |

Nooo, I'm not talking about joining a frat. Testing is really bringing me down, and although I appreciate the OT pay -- especially in regards to the oil-bill-of-doom -- I'm really getting worn down.
I just need to remind myself. It's only work. I'm doing the best I can.
I just need to endure 5 more weeks of this, and hopefully we get all the kinks worked out before all those weeks are over. |

Got my student ID today, forgot to bring my car registration so no parking pass yet. Yeesh, guess I'll have to make another trip. Getting to the school this morning was such a pain in the butt. The MLK offramp from 95 was backed up, and when I got to the light at the end of the offramp I figured out why. The whole "to MLK" street was blocked off from that intersection, but there were no smashed up vehicles. I'm assuming there was some kind of shooting or other violent crime. When I finished at DelTech, I saw the SkyFox Helicopter, so I guess it's pretty significant (I'm too lazy to go look it up right now.)
In other news, books are expensive! Duh! Having been away from school for so long, I forgotted how retarded the pricing is. |

So I had some fun downloading some good ole fashioned abandonware today. Downloading old games like that seems kinda shady. Unlike books, there aren't any clear copyright laws regarding old games. I think most sites take the attitude of, if the game is not actively being sold and no one sends a cease and desist order, then it's fair game (no pun intended.) That often leads to interesting scenarios where a popular old game by a company is forbidden, but newer less popular games by the same company are available for download. Of course, if the company doesn't exist anymore, then I think it's pretty easy to get away with distributing the games.
And of course, shadiness has never stopped me before... but lately I've been trying to eliminate any shady activities.
Ohh, and I electrocuted myself today on a camera flash capacitor. Woo! I was dissecting Josie's old camera and I forgotted about that tiny little detail. Ohh well. I'm not sure what's wrong with her camera, so I'm not trying to fix it as much as just having a science experiment. |
| Blog book? |

I'm told that A Tale of Two Cities was originally a serial published in a local newspaper. People would read a chapter every month, and if you were a fan, you'd eagerly await the next installment. Kinda like a TV show.
Well, here's an idea: publish a serial on the internets! Blogs kinda accomplish that, but they're not (usually) fiction. They're either auto-biographical/opinions, or about reporting news about specific topics. I don't see why there couldn't be a fiction-blog to provide entertainment much like the old newspaper serials, or like TV shows do now. It'd be really easy to monetize such a thing too. Most blogs are ad-supported anyway, and you know when the money stream drys up, it's time to kill the story line.
If I were more creative I'd say I could try creating that. I think the past week has made it pretty obvious that I write freekin' enough. But I don't think myself to be very creative... |

So the 07/08 heating season has concluded, and so I must square up my account with Besk Energy. Guess where most of our stimulus package (that term amuses me so) is going? To paying off OPEC. I hope that when all the Earth's oil supplies run out that there is a violent war, and all the members of OPEC's heads are put up on a pike, and countless videos of people defiling previous OPEC members' graves are posted on YouTube.
Actually, I don't have much reason to blame OPEC. Yeah their monopolistic practices suck, but for the most part it's all just supply & demand. Now that people are becoming increasingly concerned over our long term energy needs...prices are going up. I don't care if supply is actually short or not, if people percieve it, they'll pay for it.
Blerg... Since most of the price was topping off my oil tank before the summer (the oil also provides hot water,) I'm going to see if I can negotiate with Besk and transfer a good portion of the balance to next year. They have one year's worth of usage data, they should be able to project how much oil I'll need over the next year. Hopefully...just hopefully...they'll be nice. |

Vista SP1 is causing me BSoDs. The error messages don't make any sense. I haven't checked the event log, but I'm pretty sure it won't help much either. It BSoD'd on me while I was using it too, and it was really weird, because the BSoD screen was all garbled.
I suspect two things. 1) My inability to install the ATI provided graphics drivers (I checked some forums, it is in fact a long standing bug, but I've yet to see how to resolve it.) 2) Overheating. Right before I got the BSoD, I thought to myself, man this thing is getting warm, why isn't the fan kicking in? Cause, y'know, yeah laptops get warm, but after having the damn thing on your lap for over a year, you get a sense of how warm it usually gets.
I'm almost tempted to submit my issues to both ATI and Microsoft e-mail tech support queues...but...so lazy! I'm sure there's gotta be someone else on this planet with the same issues who isn't as lazy. It'll get solved eventually. I guess this gives me incentive to install Gentoo Linux tonight. I can hide out in Linux-land until then. |
| Zune 2.5 |
May 07, 2008 10:35 am |
I updated my Zune to the new 2.5 software. I don't see any difference on the Zune itself, and the changes on the PC side are...well...not that amazing. I'd call it a 2.1 release at best.
After updating, I finally plugged in my Zune. See, I haven't synced my Zune in over a month now because I moved all the music to another computer, and told the Zune software to look on the network for the files. I was afraid that it would start loading duplicate songs and or start programmatically removing and re-uploading all the music. But now that I reformatted my laptop and popped vista on, I don't have to worry about any crazy sync issues. I pretty much resigned myself to reformatting my Zune too, which I wanted to do anyway (weird album cover/artist name issues. The software doesn't detect/sync updates very well.)
So I plug in, and to my surprise, it doesn't require me to reformat my Zune. It lets me reassign the laptop as the Zune's home sync computer, but basically says any existing music won't be sync'd. Nice! I wiped the Zune anyway.
So now I'm in the long and painful process of resyncing all my music (over a wireless network share to make matters worse!) I've got so little music with me right now, I probably would've been better off leaving my Zune at home to sync more music. This has really given me some drive to wire my house for ethernet...but alas, gotta finish the electric first. Oy. Maybe I'll do that on the coming rainy days. I'm hoping the rain will keep the attic cool. |

May 06, 2008 09:47 am |
My inbox is getting overwhelmed with registration e-mails from these stupid spammers in China. (I get BCC'd on the same registration e-mail you get when you register for my site. That way if you don't get it, I can forward it to you.) I've also been getting a lot of "SYN packet" attack e-mails from my wireless router. I guess I need to dedicate some time this weekend to auto-filter these registration requests and review security on my webserver. Maybe I'll just block the entirty of China just to be spiteful.
The internet used to be such a friendly place, where warez/mp3s flowed like water...
Ohh and The Slip really feels like a rehash of previous works. Maybe that's stated somewhere on the nin.com website, but I don't read such things. It's a good rehash, but I feel like a lot of the songs are really directly decendant from Trent's previous songs, just with different lyrics. The beat, the melody, some of the samples used, really just make the whole thing feel very familiar. Heck, the lyrics could be exactly the same for all I know, but I have a hard time converting song into words in my brain.
Anyhow, I likes it, I'm not saying it's bad because it's the same 'ole. In fact, I think I would've rather paid for The Slip .vs Ghosts. |

I got a copy of my NJIT transcript. All I have to say is, thank god the professors I had that last semester marked me as withdrawn, because I don't think I officially withdrew from any classes that last semester. Because of their kindness, my culm GPA was 2.933. Not that I think the GPA transferrs over, but it somehow makes me feel better about my stay at NJIT.
I'm officially registered for classes now. Starting the 28th, Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30. |
